On May 31, 2025, at about 3:40 p.m., Troopers responded to a rollover motor vehicle crash with injuries in the southbound lanes of the New York State Thruway (I-87) south of Exit 17 in the town of New Windsor.
The investigation determined that a 2014 Chevrolet Express van was traveling southbound when it struck the rear of a 2026 Subaru Outback that was slowing for traffic.
The van rolled over, coming to rest in the lefthand lane, while the Subaru spun onto the righthand shoulder and struck a sign post.
The van was occupied by the driver and 15 passengers, including 12 children ranging in age from one to 12 years old.
Members of the New Windsor Fire Department extricated a female who was riding in the front passenger seat of the van, and she was transported by helicopter to the Westchester Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
The driver and four of the children in the van were treated at Garnet Health Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries. The remaining passengers in the van also suffered non-life threatening injuries and were treated at St. Luke’s Hospital.
The driver of the Subaru was transported to Garnet Health Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
Troopers issued the driver of the van tickets because five of the children in the van were not properly restrained.
