BROOKHAVEN, NY — Despite heavy rain throughout the morning hours on May 25, the Brookhaven Fire Department proudly carried on its annual Memorial Day Parade, honoring the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our country.

The parade marched from Bellport High School to the memorial located at South Country Road and Gillespie Path in Brookhaven, where members of the community gathered for a solemn remembrance ceremony.

Joining the Brookhaven Fire Department were the South Country and Shirley Ambulance Companies, along with apparatus from the Mastic and Bellport Fire Departments. Scouts, Veterans of Foreign Wars members, community organizations, and local elected officials also participated in the annual tradition.

Among those attending were New York State Senator Dean Murray, Assemblyman Joe DeStefano, Suffolk County Legislator Jim Mazzarella, and Brookhaven Town Councilman Michael Loguercio.

Chief of Department Giuseppe Loiacono spoke about the importance of continuing the Memorial Day tradition and ensuring those lost in war and other tragedies while serving our nation are never forgotten.

Legislator Mazzarella reflected on the meaning of Memorial Day as the father of a current military member. He also spoke about Raheen Tyson Heighten, a 22-year-old from Bay Shore who became the first Long Island service member killed in Iraq in July 2003, more than 20 years ago.

Despite the unfavorable weather conditions, residents lined the route and gathered at the memorial, demonstrating the community’s continued respect and gratitude for those who gave their lives in service to the country.

The event served as a powerful reminder that remembrance and honor endure, rain or shine.
