Mastic Firefighters Go To Jobtown

Shirley N.Y.- On Sunday May 23rd Just before 8PM the Mastic Fire Department was activated for a report of a residential structure fire on Floyd Rd near Tyne Road in their district. Chief Rudy Sunderman ( 5-12-30) responded in to the scene as the first due chief. Fire-Com reported to the chief that the occupant was still in the home. On arrival Chief Sunderman had smoke showing as well as flames coming from the roof near the rear of the structure. Chief Sunderman reported his findings to Fire-Com and requested that his department be reactivated for a 13-35 (Working Structure Fire) and to start his mutual aid plan. The Chief also confirmed that the occupant was out of the home. According to officials Police were able to help him evacuate. The first due engine 5-12-1 stretched a line and the crew from 5-12-4 secured a positive water supply from the hydrant. Firefighters quickly went to work making an aggressive interior and exterior attack to put out the fire.

Mutual aid came into the scene from Mastic Beach, Brookhaven as well as other departments. Center Moriches Stood by at Mastic’s HQ incase other alarms came in. EMS support was provided at the scene by Mastic Ambulance, Mastic Beach Ambulance and Shirley community ambulance. A rehab area was set up by the departments. In addition to rehabing the Firefighters the occupant of the home was checked out to make sure they were not injured and atleast 1 police officer was taken to a local hospital for smoke inhalation according to police. No other injuries were reported. The road was closed while emergency services operated on scene for about 1.5 hours. The scene was turned over to the Brookhaven Town Fire Marshal’s office for investigation.
