The Branford Fire Department was called to 223 East Main Street at around 12:45 a.m. on May 25th due to a reported wires down incident, which soon turned into a structure fire.
In addition to smoke and flames expanding into the attic of a multi-occupancy structure holding Baby Bones Barbershop, a day spa, unoccupied commercial space, and residential apartments, officials said that arriving workers found downed electrical wires actively arcing in the roadway. After hearing a transformer explosion, the occupants reportedly escaped themselves. Later, investigators were able to capture footage of a car passing through the downed wires and then driving away.
Firefighters effectively contained the attic fire and safeguarded nearby occupancies by forcing access and launching an aggressive interior attack. The barbershop and residential units were still in use, but the day spa and empty space were severely damaged.
Mutual aid assistance was provided by the Stony Creek Rescue Fire Company 5 and the Guilford Fire Department. There were no reported injuries. The issue is still being looked into.
