Six cars and six patients were involved in a serious multi-vehicle collision on Interstate 95 southbound between exits 56 and 55 on May 17. The Branford Fire Department was called to the scene.
Officials said preliminary information suggested one car impacted stopped vehicles at a high rate of speed, producing a chain-reaction incident. Car 6, Engine 1, Rescue 2, Medic 1, Medic 2, and Medic 3 were among the Branford units that responded; the Guilford Fire Department and North Branford Fire Department were asked to provide more ambulances.
Two of the six patients that were assessed and transported had critical but non-life-threatening injuries. During operations, southbound lanes were blocked for around forty-five minutes.
While working at the incident, a Branford fire captain also suffered a dog bite injury. He was then sent to the hospital for assessment. A dog involved in the collision was transported to the Dan Cosgrove Animal Shelter for treatment after suffering severe injuries, according to officials. The crash is still being looked into.
