Westerly Fire Department Responds to Fatal Aircraft Crash Near Airport Road

Westerly, RI - On May 18, shortly after noon, Westerly Dispatch alerted volunteer firefighters to reports of an aircraft crash near Airport Road, initially believed to involve a fire.


Upon arrival, it was determined that the plane had come down in a field near the Stop & Shop area on the opposite side of the airport, with no fire present. Engine 3 confirmed the conditions on scene and requested an additional tone for manpower. As a precaution, crews deployed a 2½-inch handline while Westerly Ambulance EMS personnel provided immediate care to the pilot.

Despite life-saving efforts, the pilot was later transported to the hospital, where they were pronounced deceased.


Multiple agencies responded to the incident, including T.F. Green Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF), the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Rhode Island State Police, Westerly Police Department, and airport response units.


The crash remains under investigation by the NTSB. Officials extended condolences to the pilot’s family and friends during this difficult time. Responding units included Car 31, Car 34, Car 391, Car 393, Car 395; Engines 1, 3, and 4; and Special Hazards 1.
