Multi-Agency Water Search Ends Safely After Unmanned Kayak Discovered

Westerly, RI - Emergency crews responded to Napatree Point Conservation Area after an unmanned kayak was discovered floating bayside, prompting concerns of a possible person in distress.


The Watch Hill Fire Department, alongside Pawcatuck Fire Department, deployed multiple boats, an ATV, and drones to conduct an extensive search of the area.


Westerly Ambulance Corps and the U.S. Coast Guard were also requested to assist.


Through coordinated efforts with the Westerly Police Department, Stonington Police, and RI DEM Environmental Police, responders were able to identify and contact the kayak’s owner using identification found inside the vessel.


The individual was confirmed safe, allowing all units to clear the scene.


The incident, managed under the direction of Chief Reall, highlighted strong interagency coordination and serves as a reminder as activity increases during the busy water season.
