Working House Fire in Shirley

On Thursday May 12th 2022 at 1:12pm the Brookhaven Fire Department, Shirley Community Ambulance, and Suffolk County Police Department units were dispatched to 27 Probst Drive between Alder Lane and Propose Road for a residential structure fire with reports of smoke and fire visible with animals trapped within the building. Police units arrived on scene and had found active fire and had told dispatch to advise fire they had a working fire. Three Suffolk County Police Department officers made entry into the house to rescue 3 dogs that were trapped Inside the home. Mutual Aids we’re provided by Bellport Fire Department, Center Moriches Fire Department, East Moriches Fire Department, Hagerman Fire Department, Mastic Fire Department, Mastic Beach Fire Department, Manorville Fire Department, Yaphank Fire Department. Multiple hand lines were put in operation for an interior fire attack and an exterior fire attack. It was reported to first responders that 11 cats were inside the home at the time and fire fighters were able to Rescue 7 cats and treated for smoke inhalation, 2 cats reportedly ran out of the home, and 2 cats had succumbed by smoke inhalation. Shirley Community Ambulance quickly started to treat the cats on scene by hooking the cats up to oxygen tanks to get more oxygen into there body and help them breathe. The cats were transported to Floyd Harbor Animal Hospital a local animal hospital for further treatment. There was no injuries reported to first responders on scene and no injuries to civilians. The fire is currently being investigated by the Town of Brookhaven Fire Marshals office and the Suffolk County Police Department Arson Section.
