TROY, NY - On April 18, 2025, the City of Troy Fire Department was dispatched to 613 3rd Avenue for a reported structure fire on the second floor. The caller reported an electrical fire. Engine One, Engine Four, Truck One, Truck Two, the Rescue Squad, and the Battalion Chief responded to the scene.
At the time of the dispatch, Engine Two was out of service as it cross-staffs Medic Two, and Medic Three was off duty, as it is only staffed from 8 AM to 8 PM. This limited coverage is due to the City of Troy administration returning to normal staffing hours, despite a significant increase in ambulance call volume.
Engine One arrived on scene with nothing showing from the front of the building. Truck One pulled in behind Engine One and began to set up. The officer from Engine One entered the building and encountered a smoke condition in the hallway. He notified the dispatcher that crews were investigating further. As he reached the second floor and opened a door, he encountered heavy fire in a room and transmitted a Signal Thirty for a working structure fire.
Additional firefighters entered the building and began evacuating residents on the first and third floors. A 1¾-inch hand line was deployed to the second floor, and firefighters conducted a rapid search of the apartment. When the fire received a small amount of oxygen, it quickly grew into the incipient stage and became visible through a window on the Bravo side of the structure.
All occupants were safely evacuated. Firefighters on the second floor knocked down the fire quickly and began ventilating the window. They then conducted overhaul in the fire room. During overhaul operations, one Troy firefighter sustained an injury. He exited the structure, received initial treatment from firefighters, and was transported to the hospital by a command staff vehicle.
Firefighters continued overhaul operations on the second floor while fire investigators began their investigation. Crews also assisted residents in retrieving pets and ensuring their safety.
The fire is under investigation. The injured firefighter was transported to Samaritan Hospital and was unable to return to duty for his scheduled shift that night. No further injuries were reported, and all occupants were accounted for. The injured firefighter has since returned to work.
