NORWALK, CT - The Norwalk Fire Department responded to an occupied multi-family residential structure at 30 Lexington Avenue at 2:40 PM on Tuesday, April 29th. Occupants on the second and third floors, unaware of the fire, were quickly evacuated by first arriving officers.
Firefighters found the bulk of the fire on the third-floor living space and sections behind the knee-walls. The fire went to a 3rd-alarm prior to being controlled due to the estimated occupancy load and failed fire hydrant water supply. This was a task heavy search operation due to the dwelling being operated as a rooming house.
The Norwalk Fire Department responded with a total of 41 firefighters consisting of five engines, two ladders, a rescue company with command and support staff. Norwalk Hospital Paramedics responded initially with five medical responders before reducing personnel once it was confirmed the were no civilian or fire service casualties.
The Red Cross is assisting with temporary housing for 22 displaced occupants. The Norwalk Fire Marshal's office is investigating the cause of the fire.
