MASTIC, NY – On Monday, May 5th, at approximately 6:20 PM, the Mastic Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a house fire on Overlook Drive off Edgewood Street. Initial reports from dispatch indicated that occupants were trapped inside the home.
Mastic Fire Department Chiefs Steve Januszkiewicz and Rudy Sunderman responded to the scene. Upon arrival, Assistant Chief Sunderman encountered a fully involved structure with reports from bystanders that one person was trapped inside. A working fire was declared. The first-due engine was Mastic Engine 1. Crews immediately went to work, stretching multiple handlines. Additional crews from neighboring agencies were activated under the mutual aid plan to assist. Firefighters battled heavy fire conditions for an extended period.
According to police and other officials, one person—a 56-year-old male—was found deceased on the back deck of the home. At least two other occupants, both in their 80s, were transported to a local hospital with burns and smoke inhalation. At least one firefighter was also reported injured.
Mutual aid was provided by the Brookhaven, Bellport, Center Moriches, East Moriches, Mastic Beach, Ridge, and Manorville Fire Departments. EMS operations were under the command of Mastic Ambulance, with assistance from Shirley, Manorville, Mastic Beach, South Country, Ridge Fire Department Ambulance, and Stony Brook University Hospital Medic 65.
