MASTIC, NY – On Monday May 5th at about 6:20 PM the Mastic Fire Department was dispatched to a call for a house fire on Overlook Dr off Edgewood St. Initial reports from dispatch were that occupants were trapped in the home.
Mastic FD Chiefs Steve Januszkiewicz and Rudy Sunderman responded. On arrival Assistant Chief Sundman had a involved home with reports from bystanders of 1 person trapped. The work fire was activated. The 1st Due engine was Mastic Engine 1. Crews went to work on arrival streaching numerous handlines. Additional Crews from neighboring agencies also were activated under the mutual aid plan to assist. Crews faced heavy fire for an extended period of time.
According to Police and other officials 1 person a 56-year-old male was found dead on the back deck of the home. At least 2 other people in the home who were in their 80’s were taken to a local hospital with burns and smoke inhalation. At least 1 firefighter was also injured.
Mutual aid was provided By Brookhaven, Bellport, Center Moriches, East Moriches, Mastic Beach, Ridge, Manorville fire departments. EMS was under the Command of Mastic Ambulance with assistance from Shirley, Manorville, Mastic Beach, South Country, Ridge FD Ambulance and Stony Brook University Hospital Medic 65.
