Rekindled Burn Sparks Multi-Hour Brush Fire Response with Widespread Mutual Aid

Westport, MA - Westport firefighters, assisted by Tiverton Fire, responded to a fast-moving brush fire off Devol Pond Drive after a previously burned area rekindled and spread into nearby wooded terrain.

The fire is believed to have reignited from an earlier controlled burn conducted by the property owner, with increasing winds contributing to its rapid extension into surrounding vegetation and large brush piles.

Crews worked for several hours to bring the fire under control, contending with challenging conditions and heavy fuel loads.

The Westport Highway Department played a key role in suppression efforts, deploying a bulldozer to break apart large piles of debris, allowing firefighters to fully extinguish hot spots and prevent further spread.

While operations were ongoing, additional brush fire-related incidents were reported elsewhere in town.

Dartmouth Fire Districts 2 and 3, along with Little Compton Fire, handled these calls, ensuring coverage across the area. Fall River EMS also responded to a separate medical call during the incident.
