Fire In Multiple Dorm Rooms At Russell Sage College in Troy, NY

On April 13, 2022 at 10:37 PM, The City of Troy’s Fire Department was dispatched for a reported structure fire at 93 1st Street Russell Sage College Dorm Rooms. The caller reported an electrical fire on the second floor. Engine six, engine four, engine two, truck one, truck two, medic four, and the battalion chief was dispatched to the scene.

On arrival Troy police units notified the dispatcher that the building is being evacuated and they had no smoke visible from the outside of the structure on the bravo side of the building. Engine six arrived on scene and notify the dispatcher that they had the building being evacuated and they had a large Multi occupancy dorm room style structure and they will be investigating. As firefighters made their way into the building they had a significant smoke condition on the second floor and they notified the battalion chief and the battalion chief transmitted the signal thirty for the working fire dispatch. With thick heavy smoke banking down on the second floor of the structure firefighters made their way back to the engine and began to deploy a two and half inch hand line to the second floor of the building.

Truck one and truck two’s began to set up in the roadway and firefighters made their way to the roof of the building. Firefighters grabbed multiple high-rise packs and made their way inside of the structure. As firefighters conducted the long lay of two and half inch hand line down the hallways towards the seat of the fire, Engine four made entry through another stairwell and began to deploy another set of high-rise packs and two and half inch hand lines to the second floor. Thick heavy brown smoke began to push from the windows of the building and from the third-floor area. Thick heavy smoke began to bank down into the street.

As firefighters connected to the hose in the hallway and deployed a hand line to the main fire room and made an aggressive interior attack. Firefighters force their way into two other rooms on the other side of the main fire room and had fire that had extended into those rooms. Command requested First Street to be shut down as they had large diameter hose deployed down the street. Firefighters inside of the building continue to check the building for anyone that may have stayed inside of their dorm rooms and not exited during the initial alarm drop. Firefighters still had a heavy smoke condition throughout the second and third floor of the structure.

Firefighters requested ventilation fans to be set up on the second floor of the structure to evacuate the smoke from the building. Firefighters conducted aggressive overhaul on the second floor in the fire rooms. Firefighters were able to knock down the heavy fire condition on the second floor within 10 minutes of arrival. Command requested the office of fire prevention and control to be brought to the scene to conduct their investigation into the incident. Firefighters remained on scene for an extended period of time. No students were injured during the fire. The fire is currently under investigation at this time.
