Attleboro, MA - Attleboro Fire Department responded to a reported chimney fire Thursday night at approximately 10:25 p.m. at a residence on Rocklawn Avenue in Attleboro.

Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy smoke throughout multiple rooms of the home, prompting the incident to be upgraded to a working fire. Although no flames were visible at the scene, crews quickly determined that the fire had extended through concealed void spaces behind walls and between floors.

Using thermal imaging cameras, firefighters worked to trace the hidden fire’s path and made several openings in walls and ceilings to access and extinguish the flames. The fire was brought under control by approximately 11:30 p.m.

District Chief Gerry Brogan described the incident as a difficult operation due to the home’s location away from the roadway and the limited access for crews. He noted that the absence of visible flames made it especially challenging to locate the seat of the fire, requiring extensive overhaul work to ensure the fire was fully extinguished.

National Grid responded to the scene and secured utilities to the property. The department’s Fire Investigation Unit remained active in determining the cause of the fire.

Firefighters stayed on scene until approximately 1 a.m. while mutual aid departments from Norton Fire Department, North Attleborough Fire Department, Seekonk Fire Department, Central Falls Fire Department, and Pawtucket Fire Department provided station coverage for the city during the incident.
