Late Afternoon Blaze Destroys Saddle Brook Home

This article is a direct street report from our correspondent and has not been edited by the 1st Responder newsroom.

SADDLE BROOK, NJ - On April 28th at 4:22 P.M., Saddle Brook fire companies were dispatched for a report of patio furniture on fire at 306 John Ochs Drive. Assistant Chief Herman Wenzel arrived on scene and confirmed the fire, which had extended into the home and attic. Chief of Department Dave Mielincki arrived shortly after and assumed command.

Engine 1 was first due and stretched handlines to knock down the exterior fire. As additional companies arrived, an interior push was made. Due to heavy fire conditions in the attic and second floor, command ordered the evacuation of all personnel from the building.

Heavy fire began venting through the roof and out the second floor. An exterior attack was initiated, with Ladder 3operating their aerial device and several handlines deployed from the exterior to knock down the flames. Mutual aid companies from Fair Lawn, Rochelle Park, and Wallington responded and assisted on scene.

The roof eventually collapsed, and the heavy fire was brought under control.

Prior to fire department arrival, Saddle Brook Police Officers removed two dogs from the home. The Saddle Brook Volunteer Ambulance Corps operated on scene, along with county-wide firefighter rehab services. Saddle Brook OEM also responded to assist with operations.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Saddle Brook Fire Prevention Office. No injuries were reported.
