Fire Marshal Jane Herrin was excited to roll out the Town of Longboat Key Fire Rescue Department Smoke Detector Program, then COVID hit. Like many other agencies, visiting residents in the homes had been placed on hold. Two years later, the program came to light. Fire Marshal Herrin, along with Fire Chief Dezzi and PIO Tina Adams, visited our first location here on the island, Gulf Shores Mobile Home Park. After visiting 66 mobile homes, our team installed a total of 46 new smoke detectors and replaced batteries in 5 existing detectors. Of the 77 homes, only 19 had working smoke alarms. It was a pleasure to be welcomed into the homes of our residents and have the chance to remind them the importance of properly installed and maintained alarms. Our residents couldn’t be happier to see us and praise the department for such a great program. As Assistant Chief/Fire Marshal Herrin always says, “It’s about working towards a Fire Safe Community.”
