EDISON, NJ - On April 22nd, the NJ Fire & EMS Institute held a safety and tactics seminar at Middlesex College, in Edison.

The first topic griped the 250 attendees' attention, which hits home. A cancer awareness and actions to reduce the risk of cancer for firefighters was discussed by the President and C.E.O. of the Firefighter Cancer Support Group, Bryan Frieders, a retired California fire chief. In the discussion, he stated that some 85 percent of cancer causing materials can be removed from gear with soap and water at the fire scene.

Pictured, Jersey City firefighters are "washed down" before returning to quarters from a tough 3-alarm fire that involved several Manhattan Ave. buildings, April 14th.
