Second Alarm Fire Destroys Leverett Home

This article is a direct street report from our correspondent and has not been edited by the 1st Responder newsroom.

On Sunday, April 12, 2026 at 11:16pm, the Leverett Fire Department -- an on-call department -- was dispatched to 105 North Leverett Road in Leverett for a report from the resident that their house was on fire. They reported all occupants were out of the building and that they had no pets. Due to the nature of the call, the dispatcher immediately upgraded the incident to a first alarm, dispatching Montague Center, Sunderland, Shutesbury, South Deerfield, Amherst, and Turners Falls. While these departments were en route, the homeowner further reported their home was fully involved in fire. Responding Leverett Fire personnel made the decision to upgrade to a second alarm. The dispatch center dispatched Erving, Greenfield, New Salem, Wendell, Hadley, and Pelham. The first Leverett Fire personnel arrived on scene at 11:30pm and reported a fully involved structure fire in a two-story single-family residence. Smoke and fire was noted from all sides and all openings of the post-and-beam structure.

Crews from Leverett and other dispatched communities began to arrive and started to extinguish the home from the exterior. Due to the home being fully involved in fire, the high heat output, and all occupants being accounted for, no attempts were made to fight the fire from the interior. North Leverett Road was closed by the Leverett Police Department and approximately 1600 feet of supply hose line was laid to a designated drafting source. By 1:30am Monday morning, the bulk of the fire had been extinguished. The main section of the residence had been consumed by fire and had partially collapsed from the back side. Command made the decision to utilize the Highway Department's excavator to tear down the remainder of the structure. Out-of-town personnel were dismissed by 4:30am and the road reopened leaving Leverett Fire personnel to watch over the remains of the structure until sunrise. All personnel were dismissed by 6am.

No injuries were reported during the incident. Four occupants were displaced by the fire and will be staying with family. The cause of the fire is still being investigated but is believed to have started on the back porch.
