Heavy Fire Engulfs Winsted Home, Spreads to Upper Floors

Winsted, CT - The Winsted Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 85 Holabird Avenue on March 26th. The first arriving unit encountered heavy fire conditions on the Alpha/Delta corner of the structure, with exposure concerns on the Delta side.


Fire crews quickly initiated an aggressive interior and exterior attack. A hoseline was deployed to protect the adjacent exposure while additional crews advanced lines into the basement and upper floors. Despite rapid intervention, the fire had extended to the second and third floors of the residence. Multiple hoselines and coordinated ventilation efforts were utilized to bring the fire under control.


Mutual aid assistance was provided by the Torrington Fire Department and New Hartford Fire Department. New Hartford personnel established Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) operations, while Torrington crews assisted with fire suppression and truck company operations. Winchester and Norfolk Fire Departments provided station coverage during the incident.


Eversource responded to secure utilities and evaluate potential damage to electrical infrastructure.


The Winchester Police Department assisted with traffic and scene control. Winsted Area Ambulance Association was on standby and evaluated one occupant at the scene. Fire department support personnel established a firefighter rehabilitation area to ensure the safety and well-being of crews operating under demanding conditions.


The fire was brought under control after an extensive firefighting operation, followed by thorough overhaul to ensure complete extinguishment. Two cats were located deceased inside the structure.


Fire Marshal Lagassie is investigating the cause and origin of the fire, with assistance from the State Fire Marshal’s Office. Two Litchfield County Fire Coordinators also responded but were not utilized during the incident.


The Winsted Fire Department reminds residents to ensure working smoke alarms are installed on every level of their homes and to practice home fire escape planning.
