WINCHENDON, MA — March 20th — A suspected structural fire at an abandoned mill building at 283 Lincoln Avenue Extension prompted firefighters from the Winchendon Fire Department in Massachusetts to react. Several 911 calls were received by the Winchendon Dispatch Center regarding a huge fire in the three-story building. Tyler Pelkey, the shift commander, stated that the building was completely involved with several exposures upon arrival and asked for a second alarm. The scale of the building and the state of the fire eventually caused a third alarm to go off. As a precaution, Winchendon Fire and Police evacuated surrounding residents from Brown Avenue.
Crews concentrated on containing spot fires on two mill buildings across the street and safeguarding neighboring residences. Mutual help organizations from a number of nearby departments provided assistance. There were no reported injuries.
