Gill Fire Crews Battle Early Morning House Fire on Vassar Way

This article is a direct street report from our correspondent and has not been edited by the 1st Responder newsroom.

At before 2:30 a.m. on March 25th, the Gill Fire Department was alerted to a residence on Vassar Way where fire alarms were sounding. Chief Kimball arrived on the site and reported strong smoke and flames coming from the home's roof and windows.

Before firefighters arrived, all residents and pets were able to safely evacuate. A first alarm was activated, prompting mutual aid from the Greenfield Fire Department, Northfield Fire Department, Bernardston Fire Department, Turners Falls Fire Department, Montague Center Fire Department, Erving Fire Department, South Deerfield Fire, Deerfield Fire District, and Friends of Northfield EMS.

Gill Engines 1 and 2 began suppression operations. A water supply was constructed with the cooperation of Northfield and Bernardston personnel by drawing water from Dry Brook and transmitting it to the scene via about 1,500 feet of supply hose. Due to the isolated location, numerous assistance units trekked in to help with firefighting efforts.

Because the structure was completely engulfed upon arrival, workers operated defensively, and the building was largely destroyed. The department expressed its sympathy to the residents and owners of the residence.

Officials commended Shelburne Control Dispatch for handling communications and resources, as well as the Red Cross, Eversource, Massachusetts State Police, and the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services Fire Marshal's Office for their help.
