This article is a direct street report from our correspondent and has not been edited by the 1st Responder newsroom.

On March 24, 2026, at 3:24 PM, the City of Albany’s Fire Department was dispatched to 13 2nd Street for multiple calls for a reported structure fire. Engine two, truck two, the rescue squad, engine one, engine five, truck four, engine seven, engine nine, Mohawk Ambulance Service, and the battalion chief responded to the scene. The first arriving unit on scene immediately transmitted the signal thirty as they had heavy fire showing from the first floor of the structure impinging on the second floor of the structure. Engine two’s crew quickly made their way to the front door of the structure and kicked in the front door, while firefighters made their way to the second floor to conduct a primary search of the building.

Firefighters quickly hit the heavy fire pushing from the front windows of the structure with the hand line and made their way inside of the first floor and began to conduct an aggressive interior attack. Within seconds the heavy fire condition quickly was knocked down. Firefighters deployed an additional hand line to the second floor as they had extension. The entire building was heavily charged with smoke, and firefighters began to pull ceilings on the second floor as they had fire that had traveled up from the first floor. Firefighters tossed a ladder to the rear of the structure as firefighters were checking for further extension. Firefighters began to vent the front windows of the structure sending glass showering down onto the sidewalk below.

As firefighters were working on the second floor, crews found fire that had extended into the apartment and firefighters began to pull the ceilings and walls apart. Firefighters used a hand line to knock down the hidden fire and overhauled the second floor. Firefighters continue to conduct extensive overhaul of the first floor pulling apart the entire windowsill area. Firefighters on the second floor of the structure handled all of the hidden fire that extended from the first floor. Unfortunately, due to the heavy smoke condition in the building prior to firefighters arriving on scene the dogs on the third floor had perished. Firefighters continued to work for an extended period of time the fire was brought under control in about 20 minutes. No other injuries were reported. The fire is under investigation at this time.
