Mutual Aid Response and Smoke Detectors Prevent Chimney Fire from Escalating in Newark

Newark, VT - Newark Fire Department expressed appreciation to its mutual aid partners following a fire response on the afternoon of March 25, 2026, on Newark Street. Thanks to the presence of working and monitored smoke detectors, a chimney fire that began extending into a wall was contained before it could develop into a fully involved structure fire.

At approximately 2:50 PM, St. Johnsbury Emergency Dispatch alerted Newark Fire along with the West Burke Fire Department, East Burke Fire Brigade, Sutton Volunteer Fire Department, Lyndonville Fire Department, Lyndon Rescue Inc., and the Lyndon Electric Department. Upon arrival, responders found that a smoldering blockage in the chimney had caused nearby wall materials to ignite.

Smoke detectors alerted an occupant inside the home and also notified homeowners who were away, enabling a swift emergency response. First responders were able to quickly address and contain the incident.

The residence sustained only minor smoke and fire damage and was deemed safe for reoccupation after emergency services cleared the scene. Newark Fire Department also extended its gratitude to dispatchers and all responding agencies for their coordinated efforts.
