The Perkasie Fire Company held an event on the evening of April 1st to mark the 100th anniversary of the line of duty deaths of Firefighters Jacob Crouthamel and Willis Sames. Firefighters Crouthamel and Sames were riding on the side boards of a Perkasie fire truck responding to what was believed to be a fire at the Bush Hotel in Quakertown on April 1st 1926. As the truck was responding to the scene the driver made an evasive maneuver to avoid another vehicle on the road which caused it briefly to go off the edge of the road. Firefighters Crouthamel and Sames encountered a telephone pole on the side of the road which caused them to be thrown from the truck. Firefighter Crouthamel died at the scene and firefighter Sames died a short while later. A procession of fire apparatus and police vehicles left the perkasie fire house at 7:35 pm . This was the same time the call came into the Perkasie Fire Company. The procession proceeded through the borough and took the same route as the truck carrying Firefighters Crouthamel and Sames. Once arriving at the location of the incident there was a ceremony in remembrance of those brave men which included the unveiling of a roadside marker that was placed at the scene of the incident in their honor. The location of this incident was on station road in Richland Township outside of Quakertown.
