Firefighters and Officers from around the county came out to bid Battalion Chief Herb Smith a farewell after 33 years of service. His family and friends also filled the room. Battalion Chief Herb Smith started as a Volunteer in Sarasota Fire Dept, and was hired by the newly formed Southern Manatee Fire District in 1990. He worked his way up through the ranks excelling in vehicle extraction. His strong ties and genuine concern for his firefighters along with his good sense of humor made him the Officer he was today.
