South Hempstead, NY — March 15th — A working home fire in the Hempstead area received mutual aid from the SHVFD. Engine 741, Chief 7400, and Chief 7401 were sent to support units that were already on the scene. Engine 741 was designated to support fire attack operations after arriving as the first mutual assistance engine. In order to bolster suppression efforts within the building, firefighters assisted in stretching and putting the first two handlines into use.
Later, crews helped with overhaul operations, opening walls and ceilings to verify the incident was completely extinguished and look for hidden flames. In Nassau County, departments frequently collaborate to supply extra personnel and equipment during working fires, a practice known as mutual aid responses. South Hempstead units were released and put back into service after finishing their assignments.
