February 26, 2026 — The Barnstable Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 4275 Main Street in Cummaquid at approximately 5:17 p.m., following multiple 911 calls confirming a working fire. Upon arrival, Car 3 (Captain, Group 4) found a 2½-story residential home with an active basement fire, prompting crews to initiate an aggressive interior attack while conducting a primary search to ensure no occupants were inside. The home was unoccupied at the time, and no injuries were reported. Firefighters successfully contained the fire to the basement, though smoke damage extended throughout the residence. A total of 21 firefighters operated on scene, with mutual aid provided by the Hyannis Fire Department and Yarmouth Fire Department, while additional coverage was handled by Sandwich and West Barnstable units. Route 6A (Main Street) was closed for approximately two hours during operations. The fire is believed to be accidental, with the official cause still under investigation. Officials credited a passerby who reported hearing smoke alarms, emphasizing the importance of working detectors in providing early warning. Assistance was also provided by the Barnstable Police Department, Barnstable County Sheriff's Office, and Town of Barnstable Inspectional Services.
