Basement Dehumidifier Blamed for Structure Fire in Sherrill; No Injuries Reported

Sherrill, NY - The Sherrill-Kenwood Volunteer Fire Department at approximately 3:14 p.m. on March 8, 2026, responded to a reported structure fire at 112 Pexton Street in the City of Sherrill. Automatic mutual aid was requested from the Oneida Castle Fire Department, Vernon Fire Department, Vernon Center Fire Department, and Munnsville Fire Department.

Chief T. Tormey (Car 1) arrived shortly after dispatch and confirmed an active structure fire, with smoke filling the residence and beginning to vent from the eaves. Sherrill Engine 1, led by Captain Z. Hasty, was the first apparatus on scene and quickly established a water supply as crews initiated an aggressive interior attack.

As additional units arrived, firefighters secured a secondary water source, deployed a backup hose line, and conducted a primary search of the home. The fire was later traced to a dehumidifier unit in the basement and was largely contained to that area, with only minimal spread to the rest of the structure. However, the home sustained significant smoke damage.

The fire was brought under control by approximately 3:30 p.m., and all responding units cleared the scene by 4:45 p.m. No injuries to civilians, pets, or firefighters were reported.

The Sherrill-Kenwood Volunteer Fire Department expressed appreciation to its mutual aid partners, including the Oneida Castle Fire Department, the Volunteer Fire Company of Vernon, Inc., Vernon Center Fire Department, Munnsville Volunteer Fire Department, Vineall Ambulance, the City of Sherrill Police Department, and Sherrill Power and Light, for their assistance and continued cooperation in safeguarding the community.
