Port Gibson, NY — March 11th — Following reports of a person in trouble on the ice, firefighters from the Port Gibson Vol. Fire Dept., located at 2939 Greig St., responded to an ice rescue on Sodus Bay. The situation was safely handled by emergency personnel operating on the bay. The public was reminded by responders that when temperatures start to climb late in the winter, ice conditions become problematic. Sunlight, shifting weather, and flowing water can swiftly weaken ice that seems solid.
Numerous fire departments in New York regularly practice ice rescues in order to be ready for these situations, which need for specific tools and training. Firefighters advised locals and anglers to fish from shore and refrain from stepping on the ice until circumstances are consistently safe once more.
