Brookhaven, NY - On 24 February 2026 Fire department units were dispatched to a local grocery store at approximately 2:15 p.m. following an automatic carbon monoxide (CO) alarm. Upon arrival, crews detected elevated levels of the toxic gas throughout the building and confirmed that all occupants had been safely evacuated.

Firefighters conducted an investigation and traced the source of the carbon monoxide to a malfunctioning HVAC system. Crews deployed multiple battery-powered ventilation fans to help remove the gas and restore safe air quality inside the store.

After ventilating the building and ensuring conditions were safe, units cleared the scene and returned to service at approximately 4:45 p.m.
