February 23, 2026 — Barrow County Fire Department announced the appointment of Lieutenant Tom McWilliams as the department’s new Fire Prevention Lieutenant. Lt. McWilliams brings more than 13 years of combined experience in law enforcement and the fire service, offering a diverse and well-rounded background in public safety. Originally from St. Charles, Missouri, he began his career in law enforcement, serving for a decade and building a strong foundation in leadership, emergency response, and community service. He later transitioned into the fire service, spending three years with the Phoenix City Fire Department, where he demonstrated a commitment to professional development and operational excellence. Throughout his career, Lt. McWilliams has earned multiple certifications, including Fire Inspector I, Fire Investigator I, Fire Officer I, and Hazardous Materials Technician. Department officials stated that his broad experience and safety-focused perspective will strengthen fire prevention efforts and community risk reduction initiatives across Barrow County.
