February 27, 2026 — Gainesville Fire Rescue and Alachua County Fire Rescue responded to a structure fire at Spyglass Apartments, 701 SW 62nd Blvd, at approximately 1:45 a.m. Crews arrived to find heavy smoke coming from a residential unit and immediately initiated fire attack and search operations. One occupant, unable to exit through the apartment, climbed onto the roof from a window and was safely rescued by firefighters. No injuries were reported. Three residents were displaced as a result of the fire. The cause remains under investigation by fire officials. Incident Commander Nick Gonzalez commended the swift and coordinated actions of responding personnel. Fire officials also reminded the public that cooking remains one of the leading causes of home fires and urged residents to stay attentive while cooking, keep flammable materials away from stovetops, and exit immediately and call 911 if a fire occurs.
