On February 24 at approximately 10:30 p.m., the 191 box was dispatched for a reported fire in a high-hazard, high-occupancy apartment building in the 100 block of Grant Avenue. Engine 191’s lieutenant arrived on scene, established command, and reported smoke showing with initial reports of occupant entrapment.

As Chief 259 was arriving and the WAR WAGON was en route, County Dispatch confirmed that one occupant was trapped on the second division. Upon arrival of 191 Rescue Engine, Chief 259 deployed a ladder to a second-division window and successfully rescued a trapped female occupant, extricating her safely down the ladder.

Engine 259 established its own water supply and laid into the scene, supplying water to Engine 149, which was operating as the attack engine. The 259 Engine crew then pulled an additional attack line from 149 Engine and advanced it to the third division for fire suppression.

The fire was located within the walls and void spaces and ultimately extended to the roof. Truck 247 performed multiple roof ventilation cuts to aid suppression and ventilation, as interior crews were unable to access certain areas of fire spread. First- and second-alarm companies worked extensively to open walls and ceilings to fully extinguish the fire.

The incident concluded with the fire brought under control. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the ACFM. Outstanding work was performed by all responding companies.
