Malfunctioning Furnace Triggers Smoke Investigation in Cumberland Township

Cashtown, PA - On 22 February 2026, Cashtown Community Fire Dept. and other area fire departments were alerted at 2:24 p.m. to 1365 Chambersburg Road in Cumberland Township (Box 1-4) for a report of smoke inside a residence.
Rescue/Engine 4 responded with a crew of six, while Tanker 4 responded with a crew of two. Three personnel remained at the station, and one fire police officer assisted with traffic control at the scene.
Engine 1-2 arrived on location and deployed a handline to a Side C entrance, with Deputy Chief 1 establishing command on Side B. Rescue/Engine 4 and Tanker 4 arrived as the second engine and first tanker, with RE4 stretching a backup line.
Investigation determined that a malfunctioning furnace in the basement had filled the entire house with a strong odor of smoke.
The incident was held to Engine 1-2, Rescue/Engine 4, Tanker 1, and Tower 5. Engine 1-2 isolated power to the furnace and confirmed no additional hazards, while Rescue/Engine 4 coordinated with the truck and tower companies to ventilate all levels of the home.
