The Harlem Fire Department is showcasing major aspects of its new Engine 1 as it gets closer to entering service. According to the agency, the engine was constructed with special specs to fulfill the needs of its response district while also improving operational preparedness.
One of the first changes is an expanded and reinforced front bumper, which provides additional protection and facilitates front-line hose deployment. The bumper also enables firefighters to transport multiple pre-connected hose lines for speedy deployment. The system consists of a 200-foot 1-inch forestry line for grass and outside fires, a 100-foot 1¾-inch assault line for vehicle and exterior fires, and a 25-foot 5-inch large-diameter hose for emergency water delivery. Warning lights and sirens were recessed to protect equipment and reduce snag hazards during operations. Officials said these features will help crews deploy faster and operate more safely on scene.
