February 12, 2026 — The Cundy's Harbor Volunteer Fire Department joined Orrs and Bailey Islands Fire Department (OBIFD) at Safe Harbor Great Island for a week focused on ice rescue training. Firefighters participated in hands-on drills designed to strengthen cold-water rescue techniques, including victim extraction from unstable ice, rope operations, and coordinated shoreline support. The training emphasized safety, teamwork, and rapid response in winter conditions, ensuring crews remain prepared for emergencies on frozen waterways. Officials said ongoing joint exercises between neighboring departments enhance regional readiness and improve coordinated response capabilities during challenging seasonal incidents.
