COVINGTON, GA — January 29th — As part of its community risk reduction initiatives, Newton County Fire Service visited South Salem Elementary School to conduct a fire safety outreach. Students learned crucial lessons about prevention and readiness from Fire Safety Specialist James Franklin and the department's fire safety mascot, Marshal.

The program's main objectives were to teach participants how to identify smoke alarms, practice home escape strategies, and know when and how to dial 9-1-1. Additionally, firefighters talked about fundamental safety precautions including meeting family members at a secure location outside the house and avoiding smoke. According to officials, educational initiatives enhance early decision-making, raise awareness, and build ties between the community and first responders.
