February 17, 2026 — The Broward Sheriff’s Office solemnly honored the life and service of Deputy John Greeney III on the anniversary of his end of watch, remembering his dedication, bravery and ultimate sacrifice. Deputy Greeney joined the agency in 1986 after serving his country in the United States Air Force as a security officer. On February 17, 1990, he was shot and killed while responding to an armed robbery attempt at a fast-food restaurant west of downtown Fort Lauderdale. Thirty-six years later, members of the Broward Sheriff’s Office, alongside community representatives, gathered to pay tribute to Deputy Greeney’s enduring legacy. The ceremony included the placement of a memorial wreath and a moment of reflection to honor a deputy whose commitment to protecting others remains an inspiration to the agency and the community he served. Officials reaffirmed that his sacrifice will never be forgotten and that his memory continues to guide the mission of service and public safety.
