SOPERTON, GA — January 22nd — As freezing temperatures arrived in the area, Soperton of the Treutlen County Fire Department issued a winter safety reminder. According to fire officials, when safety precautions are not taken, space heaters frequently start home fires. It was recommended that residents maintain heaters at least three feet away from combustible objects such as furniture and blankets.

Heaters should never be used with power strips or extension cables; instead, they should be plugged straight into wall sockets. Additionally, while leaving the house or going to bed, units should be switched off.

Officials also advised going over escape plans and monitoring smoke alarms. Simple safety measures during cold weather can help prevent fires, according to Soperton of the Treutlen County Fire Department.
