Following a recent close call, the New London, New Hampshire Fire Department advises citizens to exercise caution while disposing fireplace and wood stove ashes. Crews responded to a report of smoke coming from ashes stored in a plastic container. The substance began to smolder, but the fire extinguished due to a lack of oxygen. There were no casualties or damage recorded.

Fire experts warn that ashes can remain hot for several days and should always be stored in a metal, non-combustible container with a tight top. The container should be stored outside and away from buildings, decks, and vehicles. Plastic buckets and combustible containers should never be used. The department also stressed the importance of calling 911 if smoke or fire is seen, even if it appears to be out, so crews can confirm the area is safe.
