ARCADE, NY — January 14th — In order to familiarize newer members and prospective future technicians with cold water operations, members of the Arcade Fire Department, located at 145 North St., Arcade, NY, conducted basic ice water rescue training. An overview of the department's safety regulations, personal protective equipment, and equipment was covered throughout the seminar. In order to show correct processes and reinforce fundamental skills, crews practiced a number of real-world scenarios.
The exercise was realistic because the ice was hard and took more work to break through. Members reviewed communication and responsibility while practicing victim access, rope systems, and scene safety. Because of the seasonal weather and frozen waterways in Western New York, departments continue to place a high priority on ice rescue training. To stay prepared and promote safe operations, Arcade Fire intends to keep providing practical training.
