CHELMSFORD, MA — January 30th — The Chelmsford Fire Department’s Apparatus Committee is working on specifications for future department vehicles. Firefighters Bill Bennett, Andy Micu, Don Kohl, and Rob Albon are on the committee, along with Deputy Chief Ryan Houle and Captain Erik Byam. Participants provide their technical and operational expertise to the planning process.
Firefighter Kohl went over how axle weight distribution and ride quality are impacted by body design and equipment placement during recent sessions. These elements affect steering, braking, pump performance, and long-term durability. Fire apparatuses are frequently constructed in accordance with NFPA 1901 regulations and frequently serve on the front lines for many years. Thorough planning guarantees that new units satisfy community operating objectives and safety regulations.
