AYER, MA — January 21st — Sandy Pond will host ice rescue training for the Ayer Fire Department. While personnel practice cold water rescues, fire apparatus will be placed around the pond to provide scene lighting. Techniques for removing victims, firefighter safety, and coordinated rope operations will be the main topics of instruction. Employees will make use of rescue sleds, throw bags, and ice rescue suits that are frequently used in frozen water situations.
Regular training is crucial because the ice conditions in Massachusetts can vary rapidly during the winter. Although the practice is planned, locals may observe emergency vehicles and lighting nearby. After finishing the training, the units will be put back into duty.
