On January 30, the Canton, Connecticut Fire and EMS Department received 40 new Scott wire-frame self-contained breathing equipment (SCBA) units, 86 air bottles, and new masks. The new equipment replaces SCBA packs that have been in use for 24 years, as well as bottles that have reached the 15-year replacement cycle under National Fire Protection Association guidelines. According to department officials, the update improves firefighter safety while also ensuring compliance with current NFPA criteria. The air packs are being labeled, and hands-on training will occur in the coming weeks before they are deployed into duty.
