February 8, 2026 – The Babylon Fire Department responded to two working structure fires on Sunday, February 8, encountering an additional hazard while en route to the second incident when multiple fire hydrants were found obstructed by illegally parked vehicles. Fire units reported that several vehicles were parked within 15 feet of hydrants, with at least one hydrant completely blocked, delaying access to a critical water supply during an active emergency. Department officials emphasized that unobstructed hydrants are essential for rapid fire suppression operations and that blocked access can significantly impact response efforts and firefighter safety.
The Department reminded residents that under New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law Section 1202(3)(b)(1) and Babylon Village Code Section 343-20(A)(3)(a), no person shall stop, stand, or park a vehicle within 15 feet of a fire hydrant unless attended by a licensed operator who can immediately move the vehicle in case of emergency, unless otherwise indicated by official signage or markings. The fine for violating this regulation is $250. Officials urge residents to remain mindful of hydrant clearance requirements to ensure firefighters can operate without delay when seconds matter most.
