Medfield, MA — January 25th — With up to two feet of snow predicted, the Medfield Fire Department is recommending locals to keep outside vents clear. Drifting or plowed snow can obstruct natural gas pressure relief vents, oil tanks, and low-lying furnaces. Carbon monoxide can back up into a house when vents are blocked.

According to fire officials, blocked vents and problems with heating systems cause a rise in carbon monoxide calls during winter storms. Residents are urged to make sure carbon monoxide alarms are functioning correctly with new batteries and to inspect vents both during and after snowfall. Residents should leave the house and dial 911 for help if a CO alarm goes out.
