Medway, MA — January 25th — Because a winter storm is expected to deliver up to two feet of snow, the Medway Fire Department is advising people to keep low-lying outside vents free. Fire authorities emphasize that during periods of severe snowfall, natural gas pressure relief vents, oil tank exhausts, and furnace vents can all easily get blocked.
Covering these vents could cause gas or carbon monoxide to back up into a house, creating hazardous conditions. Because of snow-covered venting systems, fire departments frequently react to carbon monoxide alarms during and after significant storms. It is advised that residents inspect their vents both during and after the storm. Call 911 if you think there may be a venting issue or if your carbon monoxide alarm goes off.
