February 2, 2026 — Burke County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) issued a public safety reminder as temperatures were expected to fall below freezing overnight and into Monday morning, increasing the risk of black ice on roadways throughout the county. Officials warned that bridges, overpasses, and shaded roads are especially susceptible to icy conditions that may be difficult to see, urging motorists to slow down, use caution, and delay travel overnight or early Monday if possible. In addition to travel concerns, residents were encouraged to take cold weather precautions by dressing in layers, limiting time outdoors, bringing pets indoors, checking on elderly neighbors, and using heating sources safely, with a reminder to never use grills indoors. Burke County EMA stated it will continue monitoring conditions and share updates as needed, encouraging everyone to remain weather-aware and prioritize safety.
