West Boylston, MA — January 19th — According to the West Boylston Fire Department, two horse rescue occurrences in the last few days prompted the activation of the district's large animal rescue squad. When personnel arrived at Lunenburg early on January 16th, they discovered a huge draft horse that had fallen in an outdoor pasture and was unable to stand because of the freezing weather. In response to a similar event involving another horse, a second activation took place in West Boylston on the evening of January 19.

Responders used specialist large animal rescue equipment to raise the animals safely in both situations. Both horses were able to walk independently back to their barns, according to fire officials. Departments are reminded by the district team that early activation is essential since chilly temperatures can quickly endanger large animals.
